Cold Brew Coffee

Cold brew coffee is becoming increasingly popular. It is brewed without the use of heat, hence the name cold brew. Coarsely ground coffee is added to room temperature water and allowed to steep overnight in the refrigerator for approximately 16-24 hours. the typical ratio for making cold brew is 1 pound of coarsely ground coffee to to 1 gallon of water. Sometimes a cold brew filter may be used for easy cleanup or the grounds may be filtered out by pouring over several layers of cheesecloth into a clean container.

Cold brew is praised for its smooth flavor and low acidity.

Cold brew tips:

  • Be sure to use coarsely ground coffee
  • Use a cold brew filter or several layers of cheesecloth
  • Use a blend specifically roasted for cold brew
  • Use good quality filtered water

If coarsely ground coffee is not used, there will be a lot of sediment in the coffee and the cold brew will be ruined. Cold brew is best served over ice.

Recipe for Cold Brew- 1 gallon

1 Pound of Roasted Rooster Coffee Company- Rise and Shine Blend.

1 Gallon of water

1 Gallon glass container with lid

1 Cold brew filter bag

Add 1 pound of coffee to a cold brew filter bag and tie securely, next add 1 gallon of room temperature water over the grounds being sure to fully saturate them. Next place the container into the refrigerator and steep for 16-24 hours. Once the time is up, discard the bag containing the grounds. Dilute to taste, if you used a full 1lb bag of coffee, the coffee will absorb a lot of the water so we recommend filling the gallon container back up to the top with cool water once the grounds are removed.  Pour over ice and enjoy!
