Coffee is highly subjective; different people prefer different flavor profiles and origins for their coffee. It’s hard to say what makes a great cup of coffee since the preferences vary so greatly from person to person. Some people consume coffee strictly for caffeination purposes while others prefer certain aromas and tastes to start their morning and awaken their senses.

There are several factors that go into the creating the flavors of the coffee. Before roasting, coffee beans are green and have a light, earthy and grasslike smell. The roasting process brings out the flavors of the coffee and gives each type of roast a distinct flavor profile. Good quality coffee beans are the first step to a great cup of coffee but equally important is the roasting process which must be done carefully to bring out the best flavor of the beans and deliver an amazing cup of coffee.

Different counties of origin, growing temperatures, soil, altitudes and washing methods greatly influence and vary the flavors of each coffee bean. The roasting methods also greatly influence and vary the flavors of the coffee. Below are some different roast types and the qualities of each.

Light Roast- sometimes called a blonde roast or cinnamon roast, the beans are roasted at a lower temperature and have a light body. There is no oil present on the outside on the beans.
Medium Roast- sometimes called a city roast, the beans are roasted to a medium brown color, have a medium body. There is no oil present on the outside on the beans.

Medium/Dark Roastsometimes called a full city roast, the beans are roasted a chocolate brown color, the flavor has a full body and there is some oil present on the beans.  We typically use a full city roast for all of our coffees and blends to bring out the best flavors and aromas and without causing the flavor to taste compromised and burned.

Dark Roast-
sometimes called Espresso roast, French roast or Italian roast, the beans are roasted at a higher temperature and have a dark chocolate brown color and can sometimes appear black. There is a substantial amount on oil present on the beans and they have a strong, bold flavor.
