The Chemex coffee maker is a glass hourglass style coffee maker which is typically made from heat resistant hand blown glass. It is a pour over style coffee maker that is used in conjunction with a paper filter. Hot water is poured onto the grounds with a kettle creating a bloom. Then a second pouring of hot water is performed while the coffee slow drips through the filter into the lower hourglass, Once the coffee is done brewing, the filter is removed and discarded and the coffee can be poured into a coffee cup and enjoyed.
Tips for Chemex brewing success:
- Use a medium coarse grind.
- Use water heated to approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Slowly pour the hot water and allow the coffee to “bloom” before adding more water.
- -Use a gooseneck kettle, this allows the water to pour slowly over the grounds.
Although more time consuming than using a standard drip maker, The beauty of the Chemex is it creates a great, consistent cup of coffee each time and it is fun to make.
